Gate, Bollard & Pole Lights: Driveway Lighting Guide

5 min read

Outdoor driveway lighting works best in three layers: gate lights mounted at roughly 5 to 6 feet on either side of the main gate, bollard lights at 2.5 to 3 feet along the driveway edge, and pole lights at 8 to 12 feet for wide open stretches or parking bays. Use IP65-rated fixtures for anything fully exposed to rain, and stay in the 3000K warm white range so the facade looks welcoming rather than clinical. At MyDecorKart Mohali, this three-layer approach is how we plan most tricity driveways.

What each outdoor fixture is actually for

Gate lights, bollard lights and pole lights are not interchangeable. Each one covers a different height band, and relying on only one of them is the most common mistake we see in Mohali and Zirakpur homes.

  • Gate lights: wall- or pillar-mounted fixtures that light the entrance itself and keep the gate and house number visible from the road.

  • Bollard lights: short freestanding posts that wash light downward onto the driveway surface and planting beds, so you see the edges without glare.

  • Pole lights: tall street-style fixtures that cover a wide area such as a parking bay, a turning circle or the front lawn of a kothi.

  • Up down wall lights: narrow-beam fixtures that graze a boundary wall or pillar, adding depth once the main lighting is sorted.

How high should each light be mounted?

Mounting height decides whether a fixture flatters the house or blinds anyone walking in. These are the heights we recommend for typical tricity homes:

  • Gate lights: 5 to 6 feet from ground level, roughly eye height, one on each gate pillar.

  • Bollard lights: 2.5 to 3 feet, tall enough to clear low hedges and short enough that the lamp stays out of your sightline.

  • Pole lights: 8 to 12 feet for a driveway or parking area; go taller only when lighting a large open plot.

  • Up down wall lights: 6 to 7 feet, spaced evenly so the scallops of light on the wall look deliberate.

How far apart should bollard lights be spaced?

Space bollards 8 to 10 feet apart along a straight driveway. A 40-foot driveway therefore needs four to five bollards down one side, or eight to ten if you light both sides. Stagger them instead of placing them exactly opposite each other: a staggered layout uses fewer fixtures and still leaves no dark gaps. Add one extra bollard at every curve and at the point where the driveway meets the porch steps.

Which IP rating do you need in Punjab?

IP ratings describe how well a fixture keeps out dust and water, and in the tricity both matter. Mohali summers cross 40 degrees Celsius, the monsoon brings driving rain from July through September, and winter fog keeps everything damp for weeks at a stretch.

  • IP44: the minimum for covered porches and semi-sheltered entrance walls.

  • IP65: the safe default for gate lights, bollard lights and pole lights that sit fully in the open.

  • IP66 or higher: worth it for ground-level fittings that may sit in standing water during heavy monsoon spells.

Check the body material too. Powder-coated die-cast aluminium and stainless steel hardware hold up far better than thin sheet metal once monsoon humidity sets in.

Warm or cool light outside the house?

For the facade, gate and driveway, stay between 2700K and 3000K warm white. It flatters brick, stone and wooden gates, and it reads as home from the road. Save 4000K neutral white for the parking bay or the service side of the house, where clarity matters more than atmosphere. Avoid 6500K cool daylight outdoors altogether: it makes a house look like a warehouse forecourt and attracts noticeably more insects.

A five-step plan for your driveway

  • Step 1: Walk the driveway after dark and mark the dark spots, usually the gate, the first curve and the step up to the porch.

  • Step 2: Fix the gate first with a matched pair of gate lights on the pillars.

  • Step 3: Run bollards down the longer side of the driveway at 8 to 10 feet spacing.

  • Step 4: Add a pole light only if you have an open parking area or lawn that bollards cannot reach.

  • Step 5: Finish with up down lights on the boundary wall or entrance pillars for depth.

Working in this order means every stage is usable on its own, and you never over-light the plot.

Solar or wired?

Solar lights are the practical choice wherever running cable is impractical: a boundary wall far from the meter, a garden path, or a rented property. They work well across the tricity for most of the year, though you should expect shorter run times through the foggy December and January weeks when panels get limited direct sun. For the main gate and driveway, wired fixtures on a dedicated circuit stay more reliable, and you can put them on a timer or a dusk sensor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bollard lights do I need for a 40-foot driveway?

Four to five bollards down one side, spaced 8 to 10 feet apart, will cover a 40-foot driveway. If you want both sides lit, use eight to ten and stagger them so the pools of light overlap. Add one extra bollard at any curve or step.

What is the right height for gate lights?

Mount gate lights 5 to 6 feet above ground on the gate pillars or the adjoining wall. That sits close to eye level, so the fixture lights the entrance without shining directly into a visitor eyes. Always use a matched pair for a balanced entrance.

Are solar lights bright enough for a driveway in Mohali?

Solar lights suit garden paths, boundary walls and accent lighting, and they perform reliably in tricity sunshine for most of the year. For the main driveway and gate, wired fixtures give steadier brightness, especially through the foggy weeks of December and January.

What IP rating should outdoor lights have in Punjab?

IP65 is the practical minimum for any fixture fully exposed to the weather in Mohali, given monsoon rain and summer dust. Covered porches can manage with IP44. Choose IP66 for fittings mounted at ground level where water can pool.

Can I mix gate lights, bollard lights and pole lights?

Yes, and you should, because they light different height bands. Keep them in the same finish family and the same colour temperature so the driveway reads as one scheme rather than three unrelated purchases.
